Braai

“Braai – This is South Africa’s name for barbecuing, an entrenched outdoor sport that has become a national pastime. Neighbours compete among themselves for who’s-best bragging rights.”

Howard Hillman

Were you aware that we did this? No one told me. Is that why our neighbours don’t talk to us? We’re not taking part in this competition to brag about the best braai on the street?

I wish someone would have told me about this, I’m TOTALLY on board. (I beg of you to note the sarcasm)

No but seriously, I feel like hitting this guy over the head with the Checkers winning boerewors. Who told him that? If you are the South African responsible for feeding him that little bit of info YOU should get smacked over the head. ”Neighbours compete”? “Who’s-best bragging rights”?  (And don’t think me mentioning the boerewors competition is ironic, it’s a competition for the best boerewors, not a braaiing it).

I KNOW there are braai competitions in this country, but there are cooking competitions all over the world. This guy is saying that it’s a national “sport”….like you and the Tannie from across the road battle it out as to who is the best braaier. I’d love to hear from the people that do this, if there are.

Truly fascinating.

O ja, here’s the link to the rest of this guys input on South African Cuisine: South African Cuisine – by food author Howard Hillman.

In the Just….Stuff section there’s a page on Travel. I mention his site there too. Worth giving it a click.
